Dear friends and neighbors,
My name is Phu Nguyen and I am running to be your representative on the Fountain Valley School Board. I have been a Fountain Valley homeowner and business owner for 15 years. My wife, Dahlia, is a math instructor at Santa Ana College and our three children, Christopher, Michael, and Vianna, all currently attend FV schools.
I have been an active member of the Plavan and Masuda communities the past 8 years (see list of involvement below). Through these various parent volunteer opportunities, I have learned about the myriad of issues affecting our children, our teachers, our district, and our community. Today, I have decided to take my parent participation to another level, hoping to earn your vote to represent our students and families on the School Board.
We need parents, not politicians, on our school board. We must put our children’s educational interests first and foremost, and not allow politics to influence their learning. I am the only candidate with 3 kids in FV schools and I vow to tirelessly fight for the best interests of all our children, shielding them from all the shenanigans permeating the current American political landscape.
If elected, I hope to focus my efforts on:
Friends, about 4 decades ago, I left Vietnam with my family on a small boat, leaving everything behind. We left our home, in search of freedom and a brighter future, because we cannot imagine living under a communist regime. We were stranded at sea for nearly a month; in the end, 9 children died of starvation. By the grace of God, our boat was rescued and taken to a UN refugee camp. We were then sponsored to come to America, where my parents began working on day 1 to provide for our family. We used to jump into dumpsters behind K-Mart on Beach and McFadden to look for clothing and school supplies. I understand how tough it is to come from nothing, and to achieve the American Dream. (the OC Register wrote an article about my family, you can view it here https://www.ocregister.com/.../little-saigon-snapshot.../
Today, I am grateful that we now live in a nice place like Fountain Valley, and my children are able to attend our excellent schools. I am proud of being a Fountain Valley business owner that employs local high school and college students, giving them a chance to learn responsibility and helping them pay their way through school.
But, sadly, the way our school funding works and the process in which resources are allocated, not every student will have the opportunity to reach their true potential. That’s why I’m running; to ensure that all students have the access to programs, services, and the best opportunities to maximize their potential. We must view every single child as the next surgeon, fire fighter, CEO, or even the next president of the United States.
If elected, I will dedicate my service to ensuring that all our children receive the best opportunities to fulfill their destiny. I look forward to sharing my vision with you in the coming weeks, and I hope to earn your vote.
Lastly, it is always better to work as a team, than to go alone. I am running with two other fabulous candidates; Megan Irvine and Eileen Maeda. (There are 3 open seats so you can vote for all 3 of us). Megan is a PTA President at Fulton and has two kids currently attending FV schools. Eileen is a long time teacher who founded the FV music program. Together, we hope to bring some changes to the School District and truly put students’ interests first. We hope you can help us spread the word and we look forward to meeting you on the campaign trail.
